SprayDREI: Spray drying, redefined.

Dreidoppel stands for flavour expertise since 1899. In addition to liquid flavours and pastes, our portfolio also includes powdered flavours, which we produce using two different technologies: applied and spray-dried.

We offer these spray-dried flavours under the SprayDREI brand in particularly high quality – and, if required, even vegan, kosher or halal.

Our new spray drying plant is located at our Langenfeld site and is used for our SprayDREI range, for individual customer-specific developments and for contract spray drying.


Differences in the production of powdered flavours

Powdered flavours can be divided into two main categories based on their method of production, both of which we offer in our range:

  • applied flavours
  • spray-dried flavours

Our particularly high-quality spray-dried flavours are available under the SprayDREI brand.

How powdered flavours are made:

Carrier | Maltodextrin

A common carrier substance is maltodextrin – a flavourless mixture of carbohydrates.

Flavour | Applied

For an applied flavour, a liquid flavour is added to the carrier substance and remains on the surface. Over time, volatile flavour compounds can detach from the carrier, which shortens the shelf life.

Flavour | Spray drying

To produce a spray-dried flavour, a liquid flavour is embedded into the carrier matrix via the spray drying process. This encapsulation helps to preserve the intensity of the flavour for a longer period.


Spray drying explained simply

Spray drying (also known as atomisation drying) is a common process engineering method for the continuous production of powders or agglomerates from liquids such as solutions, emulsions and suspensions.

The material to be dried is conveyed via an atomiser or nozzle into the upper part of a spray tower. The spray mist, consisting of extremely fine droplets, passes through a stream of hot air and dries by evaporation, forming a fine powder.

The resulting dry product is separated from the cooled air stream by a cyclone separator and removed directly from the fluid bed of the drying tower.

The finished spray-dried flavour is then ready for bottling.

Spray drying is a precise and reproducible process in terms of uniform particle size distribution, controlled moisture level, bulk density, particle shape and dispersibility.
